Six summits done, one to go: Antarctica’s Mount Sidley
Mikšovský and Dohnálek have already completed six of the seven summits: Kilimanjaro in Africa, Ojos del Salado in South America, Pico de Orizaba in North America, Elbrus in Europe, Damavand in Asia and Mount Giluwe in Oceania. In May 2025, they climbed Mount Giluwe in Papua New Guinea via a route that, according to them, had never previously been used by a tourist. The locals subsequently named it the “Slovak Route.”
This leaves just one summit to complete the Volcanic Seven Summits – Mount Sidley in Antarctica, at an elevation of 4,285 metres. This final step is also by far the most expensive. Mount Sidley lies deep in the Antarctic interior, far from conventional transport infrastructure. The expedition requires special air transport and comprehensive logistical support and can only take place during the short Antarctic summer. The funds raised will therefore be used primarily to cover the expedition’s transport and logistics. The project website currently lists a target budget of USD 77,000, of which USD 30,000 has already been raised. If the necessary funds can be secured and the expedition goes ahead, the journey across seven continents and their seven highest volcanoes can finally be completed.
Alpina boots pass the Ecuador volcano test
Before taking this final step in Antarctica, the two mountaineers continue to embark on other high-altitude expeditions. In 2026, they also travelled to Ecuador, where their objectives included the high volcanoes Chimborazo, Guagua Pichincha and Cotopaxi. Alpina footwear accompanied them on this expedition, providing an opportunity to prove itself in the demanding conditions of the South American mountains. The boots passed the test with flying colours, performing reliably even on the challenging volcanic terrain of these peaks. At one point, one pair even found itself in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres at the same time, as the Equator runs through Ecuador.
